West Yorkshire Police: Volunteers Induction
Challenge:
West Yorkshire Police has launched a major recruitment drive to encourage volunteers into the service. The role of the volunteers is to undertake additional duties to the ones currently performed by police officers, support staff and the Special Constabulary - adding value to services already provided. Recruiting and then training volunteers who have no policing knowledge is a major challenge that requires a flexible learning solution that can fit the availability of the volunteers. Furthermore, it is important for volunteers to have gained a good understanding of a number of key issues and had a thorough induction prior to them to begin to help at their local police station.
Solution:
E-learning provides the ideal route to create a flexible delivery solution. A West Yorkshire Branded TMS provides the management framework for hosting a range of e-learning resources covering topics such as: Understanding Diversity, Health & Safety, Force Structure. Each volunteer has their own personal training record from which they access the learner resources. On completion of each of these modules their knowledge and understanding is tested through a combination of online assessment which incorporate: hot spot, multiple choice, drag and drop and short answer questioning. Each volunteer is given instantaneous assessment feedback and the results are recorded on their training record. Within the TMS the learning resources have been structured so that they must complete and pass the module assessment before the next learning module can be automatically added to their training.
Benefits:
The creation of an online flexible delivery route has removed many of the barriers to delivery that would have occurred if training had been delivered in a conventional way. Firstly learners do not have to attend a central training activity, which with volunteers from all over the region would have been a co-ordination nightmare, plus timing such an event, especially when some of the volunteers already have full time jobs, would be impossible. Secondly, the system provides a route for learners to progress at a pace to suit them, yet provides an easy means for the tutors to monitor progress and provide additional support as required. The third, and perhaps most important benefit is that the learners enjoy the process, which ensures they will continue to volunteer.
